Just over an hours drive from Almunecar is Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada is the principal mountain area which stretches across southeastern Spain from Gibraltar to Alicante. Here, more than a dozen peaks over 3,000m break the skyline, including mainland Spain's two highest peaks - Mulhacen (3,482 m) and Veleta (3,398m).
Snow-capped throughout most of the year, the whole area has recently been declared a National Park.
Just an hours drive away, the Sierra Nevada resort of Solynieve, Europe's most southerly winter sports resort has skiing at an altitude of over 10,000 feet combined with brilliant sunshine most of the winter. With good weather the views are spectacular - almost unbelievable. When it does snow, it comes down light and dry because of the low humidity in Southern Spain. When it doesn't snow, Sierra Nevada has one of Europe's most advanced snowmaking systems.
Granada is one of the classic monumental cities of Andalucia and, at more than 700 metres above sea level, the highest.
Without doubt, the principal legacy of the city is Moorish and its most precious jewel is the Alhambra. Sometimes called the eighth wonder of the world, this complex of royal quarters, patios, fountains, pools and gardens forms the peak of Moorish artistic and architectural excellence, and should be visited by anyone who has the opportunity.
